It sounds like an oxymoron, doesn't it? Living freely, while living on a budget seems an impossible feat. However, it is something that Tyler and I have become passionate about. Our desire is to live within our means, but to be able to create memories and experiences so we don't look back on this time with regret. We pray that by living without debt, we will have the ability to give generously when opportunities arise.
Shortly after our wedding, Tyler and I were discussing finances and decided that our money mindset need to be less money-focused, and more life-focused. We work jobs to fund our lifestyle, in order to make memories with our daughter, friends and family, and to have the ability to help others. We decided that our jobs are something we can't take too seriously, and we both agreed to not let the other be miserable in a job just for the sake of money.
For this reason, Tyler has worked in ministry the entire time we have been married. We knew going into ministry that we would never be in it for the money, but it is something that Tyler enjoys and is passionate about, so it is something we pursue as a family. Tyler is also passionate about teaching music, which is why he owns his own music school. Being in part-time ministry, and part-time self-employed is hard, but it has been so rewarding.
I (Kailey) work part-time for a builder. It isn't something I ever imagined myself doing, but it does give me flexibility with my work schedule (I only work 2 days a week,) it pays well, and allows me to have a creative outlet. Would it be easier and more cost effective for me to work a full-time job? Sure! But we have chosen to prioritize time with our daughter, while still being able to pay the bills.
In our almost four years of marriage, Tyler and I have been able to take several wonderful vacations, without going into debt: Disney, New York City, Ft. Meyers (4 times) Arizona (Phoenix, Tucson, Grand Canyon, and more!) San Francisco (thanks Daniel and Tabitha!) Cincinnati, French Lick, Washington D.C., Nashville, Indianapolis, North Carolina, etc.
We have placed a priority on traveling, spending quality time together, and making memories as a family. None of this would have been possible, however, without our money mindset shift. We budget so that we can live freely. We work hard at jobs we love so that we can provide for our family and bless others.
What are some ways your money mindset has shifted and has given you more freedom?
